Inside the Glass Cockpit: Staying Ahead of the Airplane
You’re preparing for an instrument approach when ATC changes your clearance. There’s a new heading, an altitude to maintain, and an approach to brief—all while keeping the airplane under control.
This is where instrument training comes together: flying accurately, managing information, and planning your next move.
In our first two Tech Series articles, we explored the Austro engine and what it takes to maintain our Diamond fleet. This week, we’re stepping into the DA40 NG cockpit to look at the Garmin G1000 NXi and GFC 700 autopilot—and the skills these systems help pilots develop.
A Clearer Picture of Your Flight
The G1000 NXi brings flight instruments, navigation, and engine information into an integrated flight deck.
During instrument training, the lesson goes beyond reading the displays. It’s learning to connect what you see: where you are, how the aircraft is performing, and whether your flight path matches your clearance.
Guidance You Understand
The flight director provides guidance that a pilot can follow while hand-flying. With the autopilot engaged, the GFC 700 can control the aircraft according to the selected modes.
Understanding those modes is an essential skill. What is the system doing now? What is it armed to do next? Is that what you intended?
Those questions belong in a pilot’s instrument scan.
More Time to Think Ahead
Used appropriately, the autopilot can help manage workload while you communicate with ATC, review a procedure, or prepare for the next phase of flight.
The pilot still manages power, monitors airspeed, verifies the flight path, and makes the decisions. Effective automation use requires attention and understanding.

Hand Flying Still Matters
Strong instrument skills include precise manual control and confidence using automation. Training should develop both, including the ability to recognize when to take over and fly the airplane yourself.
At Take Flight Aviation, our DA40 NG fleet brings these elements together in a modern training platform.
Whether you’re ready to begin your instrument rating or interested in transitioning to a Garmin glass cockpit, let’s talk about your next step.
